Fabrication
“You buy the slab, we do the fab.”
Material Selection
Fabrication begins with material selection. In the market today there is a lot to choose from and each material can have different outcomes to the cost of your project. Projects typically start out with either pre-fabricated countertops (meaning they already have been cut down from a slab and have an edge detail provided), or you select a slab of stone.
Pre-fabricated material comes in a set size and may not work for all projects. For example, if you have a large island, the pre-fabricated material may not be large enough for the project. There are also limited colors available for pre-fabs. Depending on the color chosen, if the pre-fabicated countertop has a lot of “movement” if may effect the seam outcome. This should be considered at the time of purchase.
Slabs are the second option for buyers. They range in size depending on the material. When you purchase a slab of stone, we, the fabricator then cut it down to custom templated size and add an edge detail. A 2cm slab often has what is called a laminated edge. You may choose to purchase a 3cm slab. A 3cm slab may not require the edge to be laminated, therefore lowering your fabrication cost.
Granite
Granite is a hard natural countertop material that comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. It is quarried around the world and priced moderately in the market. It holds up very well as a countertop material.
Quartz aka Engineered
Quartz is a man made or engineered countertop material. It has a large array of color choices. Quartz performs very well as a countertop material. It is very popular in the market today. Below are some popular manufacturers we commonly work with:
Cambria
Silestone
Daltile
Arizona Tile and Stone
Marble, Limestone, Travertine, Soapstone
Natural stones are made in slab format for use as countertops and architectural detailed applications. If you are interested in one of these materials we can advise you on performance and wear to assist you with your stone selection.
Edge Detail
Selecting an edge detail can inform how much fabrication will be done to your countertops. Today, the most common edge detail asked for is a “square eased.”
